HISTORY OF DENIM
JEANS
At the beginning, jeans were created as practical work wear, and their indigo colour was chosen so that it would better hide the dirt when worn by miners and workers. This fabric is usually made of cotton, blended with other organic fibers such as linen and it is widely used in dressmaking. Denim, thanks to its excellent features and characteristics, is ideal for both summer and winter. Born as workwear, during the years, we witnessed its rise into the fashion world, in which it became a timeless, staple piece. The most famous and icon designers in the fashion world used this material in their collection and jeans became part of our everyday life.FUN FACT: Jeans were born in America, but became popular outside of the US when off duty soldiers wore their jeans while off duty overseas.
DENIM FABRIC FEATURESS AND BENEFITS
Denim, also known as jeans, obtains its unique characteristics from its indigo dyestuff, washes and unique designs. Like other materials, jeans can be washed down, chemically or mechanically finishes, dyed, etc. It has many advantages, both in washing and care, but actually has a few disadvantages. One of these is of course its thickness, which makes the material strong and resistant, but on the other hand if is hard to create hems and fabric folds.
Denim advantages: strong, resistant, durable, easy to wash, does not fray and it's shrink-resistant.
Denim disadvantages: considerably thick, not sustainable and tends to discolor.
DENIM FABRIC USAGE
This material is mostly used in dressmaking for the realization of classical jeans and other fashion pieces such as jackets, purses, handbags and much more. During the last years, to follow latest fashion trend, changed its appearance and evolved. For this reason, we frequently found it ripped, adorned with rhinestones, coated or laminated etc. This fabric is widely used in upholstery, to cover and renew furnishing accessories such as chairs, cushions and much more. Let's discover together all the types of this incredible material.
Raw Denim: has often a deep blue color, the fabric is pretty rigid and stiff. It has not been washed or treated in any way.
Selvedge Denim: this fabric has color around the sides which prevents the color from fraying. The selvedge can be orange, yellow or of any colors depending on the manufacturer. Nowadays, Japan is the main producer of this kind of denim
Stretch Denim: the material is actually blended with elastane to give it stretch, and this fabric is ideal for the realization of comfortable cloths
Sanforized Denim: the majority of this fabric, apart from raw denim, on the market is sanforized, which mean that the fabric does not shrinks after washings.
Acid Washed Denim: also known as washed denim or marble denim, basically this terms refers to a finish achieved in denim fabric and obtained through a pomice stone soaked in chlorine.
