LININGS
Linings are essential in dressmaking and tailoring, both for men's and women's wear. Apart from their decorative and aesthetic purpose, linings have functional purposes. They are often applied of jackets, coats, blazers and many other garments as well as on fashion accessories such as purses and bags. Lining extends the lifespan of a garment since it will protect the fabric from direct skin contact and will add an extra warmth during cold months.
Before moving on, it is essential to make a clearer distinction between lining, interlining and underlining. Lining is attached to the inner fabric and it is used to add structure to the garment, put it on and off more easily, and also to hide unaesthetic finishes. Interlining in tailoring and dressmaking is used to add more warmth to the garment, and it often occurs in coating. Last but not least, underlining is basically a second fabric layer, used to add even more structure and body to a garment.

LINIGS FEATURES AND BENEFITS
LINING COMPOSITION - linings can be made of almost all fibers and materials. On the market, we frequently find them made of synthetic fibers such as polyester blends, viscose and acetate as well. Taking about organic fibers, linings (as well as interlinings) can be made of cotton, cotton blends, wool and carded wool. The choice of the material is based on the type and usage of the garment itself. Most of linens we frequently see are synthetic, due to their luxurious and silky appearance. Chemical fibers are also popular nowadays.
LINING FINISHING: As other fabrics, linings are subjected to finishing processes, to enhance their positive features and qualities. Dyeing lining is actually very frequent in dressmaking. The process is performed with a dyeing machine and it is basically the usual piece dyeing.
Now let's talk about the color choice of you linings. For a more conservative and elegant look, we recommend to match the color of the outer fabric for an overall finish that compliments the garment. If you want to add a touch of personality to your project, you can choose a contrastive color, add unique embroideries and much more.

THE IMPORTANCE OF LINING
- protect the skin from direct contact with the fabric, increasing the lifespan of the garment itself
- improve the quality, structure and augment the aesthetic value of the garment
- improve the wearability of the fashion pieces, since it will be more comfortable
When choosing, for example a jacket for an important event such as a wedding or a business dinner, keep in mind that the interior of your jacket is as important as the exterior. For the above mentioned kind of occasions, choose a solid jacket with neutral lining, for a classic and neutral look. On the other hand, if you're deciding what you will be wearing, for example, at an evening birthday party with your friends or colleagues, choosing a contrastive color lining could be a great choice to add a pop of color to your overall outfit. Keep in mind that lining can influence the comfort and wearability of a garment. A high-quality lining can add that sense of luxurious appearance to a plain garment, while a cotton or synthetic lining can be much more affordable and practical.
