Jacquard fabric is a fabric with intricate patterns woven into the fabric itself, and it is named after its inventor, Joseph Marie Jacquard. Its history is closely tied to the development of mechanical looms and the Jacquard mechanism, which revolutionized textile production. All those fabrics with complicated and rich patterns such as gobelin, damask and brocades all belong to the jacquard family. This fabric is ideal both in home decor and dressmaking. Use it to cover lamps, chairs, sofas and other furnishing accessories.
The history of the Jacquard loom is a fascinating story of innovation in textile manufacturing. The Jacquard loom, named after its inventor Joseph Marie Jacquard, played a crucial role in the development of automated weaving and the textile industry. Joseph Marie Jacquard was a French weaver who developed the notorious Jacquard loom. He was born in Lyon, France, which was, at that time, a significant center for silk weaving. Joseph Marie Jacquard invented a mechanical loom that used a series of punched cards to control the raising and lowering of individual warp threads. Each card had holes punched in it, and the position of these holes determined the pattern.
The Jacquard loom's success led to its widespread adoption in the textile industry, initially in Lyon, France, and later in other textile manufacturing centers around the world. Modern versions of the jacquard loom are still used today to produce high end fabrics with very complex designs.
Jacquard fabrics are made with the notorious Jacquard loom or a modern and computerized version of it. Materials realized with this peculiar and antique technique are still today appreciated in the fashion world. These fabrics feature intricate and modern patterns are easily recognizable. These materials are pretty heavy, so they are ideal for the creation of warm winter fashion pieces such as coats, jackets and also accessories like handbags and purses. Let's discover now the history of these materials.

JACQUARD FABRICS FOR DRESSMAKING
Some fabrics for dressmaking take their name from warp and weft interlacing or from their peculiar embellishments. Therefore, we can distinguish smooth or plain fabrics, textured or twill fabrics and satins. Plain or smooth weave fabrics are ideal for flat surface applications. The criss-cross pattern of the plain weave results in a strong and versatile cloth. Twill or textured fabrics are even more complex, and they feature diagonal lines. They have the characteristic diagonal appearance. Even thought they are made with heavy materials, they are not too stiff and they adapt to movements. Last but not least, we have satin weave, which do not feature diagonal lines, but warp and weft are spaced in distributed spots. These fabrics are usually characterized by luminous, glossy and luminous surfaces.
Talking about jacquard, today the term does not refer only to fabrics made with that specific loom, but it's used in a broad sense for all the fabrics with geometric, complex patterns. The invention of jacquard loom was a revolution in textile manufacturing and the materials are still nowadays appreciated in many fields for their beauty and excellent features. Apart from dressmaking, these fabrics are used also to upholster sofas, cushions and furnishing accessories for their resistance and versatility.
