Basically, rayon and viscose are the same material, but the latter is considered a type of the former as other materials such as lyoncell and modal. Moreover, compared to viscose, rayon also derives from natural fibers, but the cellulose is processed with chemical agents. In Europe, viscose is called rayon, as an alternative term to call these incredible materials.
VISCOSE MATERIAL
Viscose material is obtained from mainly from wood paste of trees with a rapid growth. Generally these are fit trees, poplars and birch trees. Originally conceived to be the cheapest version of silk, viscose in reality is much more similar to cotton. It was showcased for the first time at Paris EXPO in 190 by the father of this material: the french man Hilaire de Chardonnet.HOW VISCOSE IS MADE
Now, let's discover together how this fabric of natural origin is produced. During the production procedure, wood fragments are processed to obtain sort of cellulose paperboards, which actually look like absorbent paper. These paperboards are then reduced to small pieces and then processed with chemical agents. By this way, a sort of highly viscous paste is obtained, and from that paste actually derives the name viscose. Then the dough is extruded through proper supply chains. To get a fabric mush more similar to cotton for appearance, volume and tactile experience, viscose is cut in length and processed with the methods as natural fabrics.
FEATURES AND BENEFITS OF VISCOSE
Viscose has some of the benefits and features of cotton such as breathability, inflammability, moisture absorption capacity and transpiration. Unlike cotton, viscose has a better drape and is more slippery. Worn is a bit less comfortable than cotton, but this makes the fiber more likely to stain and get dirty. If viscose is knitted bow, it will be more prone to pilling, feature that does not indicate a cheap quality of the material. On the other hand, viscose is moth-resistant and its color is much more vibrant, because this material is normally paste-dyed. Its smooth surface provide this fabric a luxurious appearance, but in reality its price is not elevated.
