THE HISTORY OF PASSEMENTERIE
The history of passementerie is very ancient. In the West tassels were basically strings around a suspending one. It was already an ornament before the usual knot that terminated a cord. That tassel actually evolved untile the 16th century, were in France a group of artisans named the Guild of passementie was actually created. The practitioners of this art, were subjected to seven years of study and then after you will become a master of a guild section. Tassels were their primary expression, but there were also fringes, cords, tapes and many other ornaments. Time passed and French practitioners spread their new art outside their country, while France became the prior industrial producer of trimmings in Europe. Tassels, fringes and cord changed their shape, size and appearance according to periods, for example during the Victorian Era were larger and more elaborated.
Nowadays, ornaments and embellishments are used especially to renew old clothes and play around with shapes, colors and textures. Handmade passementerie is today something pretty rare, as ornaments are most of the time of industrial production and made of cheap materials.

PASSEMENTERIE ORNAMENTS
Passementerie for clothing can be made with almost every kind of material. In ancient times, they were mostly made of silk, thanks to its smooth and lustrous appearance. Linen and cotton were also used. Unfortunately nowadays, ornaments and embellishments are made of synthetic materials and pearls or beads are frequently added. As we have already saw, it is essential to distinguish between industrial and handcrafted trims and ornaments. The major differences can be found in all those embellishments that actually require weaving, such as fringes and gallons. Not to mention cords, which are also produced with semi-automatic machines but also by hand, by using a twist device. Of course, handcrafted passementerie is the most refined and actually costs more. In fact, the most used nowadays is that of industrial production.
What really distinguishes passementerie is actually its applications. In fact, we usually distinguish between two types of passementerie: the one for furnishing and the second one for clothing and dressmaking. The first one is specifically designed to decorate, embellish furnishing accessories such as sofas, chairs, drapes and much more. Generally the most used passementerie ornaments used in home decor are fringes, cords, tapes and webbings. On the other hand, clothing passementerie makes extensive use of trim laces, embroidered edges and ribbons of any kind. The majority of these ornaments are used to decorate and finish wedding dresses.
