NEOPRENE FABRIC
In the world of fashion, neoprene fabric has become one of the most revolutionary and used materials in dressmaking, also thanks to its amazing features and benefits. Neoprene reached the marker in 1930, but reached fame only twenty years later, when its was used for the first time for Californian surfers, which immediately appreciated its thermo-insulating properties, flexibility and resistance.
For everyday clothing, this material is easy to sew, does not need finishes and is cheap. If you want to cut and shape ti, you'll just need a rotary cutter or a pair of sharp scissors. In dressmaking and in the fashion industry, this material is widely used for basic, casual clothes and sportswear. It is ideal for mild and cold season, a it is soft, warm and delicate on the skin. Not too many years ago, we saw it on runaways of iconic designers, usually matched with laces, suede and cotton.
Neoprene is the trading name of the company DuPont Performance Elastomers, which produced synthetic rubbers, all based polychloryprene. The average of this material is around 3-5 millimeters. Polychloroprene is usually sent to textile industries in liquid form. It is also called scuba fabric, an acronym for the phrase Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus.
