WHITE CRINOLINE
The crinoline was an item of women’s underwear worn throughout the 19th century.
It consisted of a rigid ‘cage’-like structure that supported and gave volume to skirts.
The term refers to both the structure and the fabric from which it was originally made.
The fabric used to make the crinoline, known as crinoline, is a stiff, starched fabric woven in plain weave, and more rarely in twill or satin.
The crinoline provided both rigidity and flexibility to the structure, and was water-resistant yet breathable.
Later, the term crinoline came to refer to a plain-weave fabric with a very stiff hand, achieved through starching or the use of synthetic fibres such as nylon.
It is used as reinforcement or padding in the making of stiff petticoats, such as those used for wedding dresses.
